Top Student Answers #9 : Insights from Oneli—A UoR Medical Student

With the Spirit of the last post alive, we’ll travel far down south of the island today and would meet another Medical Student from University of Ruhunu. Oneli Jayamila, A Student from Dharmasoka College – Ambalangoda will be answering our questions today.

RG : Oneli , What you consider , you have did right in your time as an A level student?

ON : As an A/L Student—Science or any stream—Time management is very important to get a standard rank in the exam. So first I decreased my screen time on my mobile and Television. No unnecessary works. Mainly attention on my studies. It doesn’t mean that I studied 24 hours a day. I studied effectively.

RG : What would you do differently if you get another chance as an A level student?

ON : Actually, I got two As and a B on Biology. Even though I am selected for medicine, because of the “B”, I couldn’t go to my dream university—Peradeniya. So If I have another chance, I’ll surely pay more attention on Biology than what I had.

RG : What is the most significant thing you would say for a current aspiring A level student?

ON : I think the most important thing for you as an A/L student is your Effectiveness of Study. It isn’t important how long you study. The important thing is how engaged you are, while you are studying. How much you understand is more important than how long you work.

RG : What single technique or practice have helped you a lot in your journey?

ON : The main technique I used is Active Practice in my studies. I did a lot of MCQs , Essay questions and Whole Papers. I did last 10 years of past papers, clearly as well. I was used to create my own mind-maps and short notes too. They were very useful to understand some theories totally in my own. If you use short notes, don’t use another one’s. Make your own.

P.S – Oneli have begun her journey in University of Ruhunu, a week ago. We are wishing her all the very best for the journey ahead.
